Due to the changed climatic conditions, controlled irrigation in agriculture is currently gaining importance. Especially in the field of permanent crops, it now ensures the income security and long-term prospects of fruit grower farms. Not only the investment in the irrigation infrastructure, but also the efficiency of water use is an important economic factor for companies.

In the central German dry area (Querfurt, Saxony-Anhalt), therefore, the effectiveness of drip irrigation in an apple orchard is being checked with the aid of modern measuring technology.

Experimental Procedure

Observing the water balance in the (drip-) irrigated root zone of apple trees. Incorporation of 9 Tensiomark and 9 Hydra probes at depths of 30, 60 and 90 cm along a tree line of the Elstar apple variety. Simultaneous measurement of the most important climate parameters, i.a. to calculate the potential evaporation.

The devices were delivered by ecoTech and installed together with employees of the University of Halle.
